Who the Hell are the OTHER Guardians of the Galaxy!?!? Part 1: Yondu
So, this is a follow-up to my first article, which you can read HERE. As long as Marvel keeps shilling out the crazy for this movie, I’ll keep writing articles that explain who these folks are. That said, when I started working on the Nova Corps, I ended up with too much information to squeak in by my deadline, so here is a focus on one specific character. In a couple weeks, I’ll have the lowdown on the Nova Corps, giving all you guys time to research it and tell me how wrong I am.
This week, a bunch of casting announcements were made for Guardians and I felt as though I should educate some folks as to who some of these people are.
The fin means he’s fast… so does the loincloth.
Michael Rooker was cast as Yondu. Being that James Gunn uses him for everything, this doesn’t come as much of a pleasant surprise.
Yondu was a founding member of the original Guardians who were from the future. He used a bow and arrow alongside a ceremonial knife. This was pretty much because he was a last of his race and wanted to honor his dead compatriots, or something. Now, keep in mind, this was a guy who was using a bow and arrow one thousand years in the future. AND he was considered the bad ass of the team of futuristic heroes.
The rumors is that he may be a bad guy, but I have my doubts. Yondu, in the original Guardians, was an extremely devout warrior who mourned the passing of his race. Of all the members of the team, he was the one that was most in tune with his spirituality and was kind, to a fault. Turning such a honorable character into a villain would be pointless when there’s, you know, a shitload of VILLAINS that could actually fill that role.
Imagine if Old Spock had been the villain of the reboot Star Trek.
That said, it’ll be interesting to see how an actor like Rooker portrays this intriguing, dogmatic, meditative, and anachronistic character.
I’m guessing he’ll probably growl a bit as his voice cracks in an intimidating way.
