When the Monster Hunter Van Helsing Select Action Figure was unveiled by Diamond Select Toys, I was shocked. I’m a huge fan of all things vampire, and their original take on Bram Stoker‘s classic vampire killer is a thing of beauty. A completely new take on character by long-time DST sculpter Jean St. Jean; this is a figure that sets itself apart from what you envisioned in your head, but also keeps in line with the core of character.
The first thing I noticed was the fantastic base that came with this collectible. An undead succbus from the nether-realm is rising from the dead to attack our hero. Does he even flinch? Hell no. The base has points in it where his feet can fit in and he can look very regal as he takes on his foes.
Just how does he plan on fighting the good fight? Well, he’s packing more than enough weaponry to go claw-to-claw with any of Dracula’s Brides all at once. Equipped with an Axe, Pistol, Scimitar, and a Musket; this guy means business. He may be a bit older, but he’s strapped down with enough wooden stakes across his chest, that he’d make Buffy jealous and be sure to put fear into the hearts of any vamps trying to mess with him.
At 7 inches tall, Van Helsing is pretty impressive. Like I said, he’s a departure of what we’ve seen in the movies with actors like Anthony Hopkins and Hugh Jackman taking on the role. I love this look with the cropped hair (can’t grab at that now can you Drac?) and the huge scar on his non-working eye. If you saw this guy in a Victorian back alley, you’d be sure to turn the other way!
The articulation is fantastic as well, as you can pose him in multiple ways. Swivels in the wrist and the ankles really do well to balance out the figure as he can hold onto his weapons and his footing stays steady so that he doesn’t fall over. I had a blast putting him into sweet action poses.
If you’re a fan of the macabre and all things vampire like myself, this is the figure for you. Amazing paint job throughout the figure, no bleeding or splotches. Tons of fantastic poses to put him in, and the base serves as a fantastic accessory to accompany this collectible. DST will be releasing Monster Hunter Lucy Westenra this Fall to join Abraham in the battle against the undead.
