SPOILERS!!! I’m really stuck here. Normally, I don’t have a problem identifying things I like but Mad Max: Fury Road is playing with my emotions. I want to say that I have a love/hate relationship with it but I really don’t want to commit even that much. I will attempt to explain.

Love: Strong female protagonist that is neither sexualized or in need of rescue. Charlize Theron is a total bad-ass in this film. I can’t get over how awesome she is and how much I need more characters like this in movies. I can’t wait for the female version of Jean Claude Van Damme, by that I mean, an actress that is completely devoid of acting ability but still stars in action movies due to having a good on-screen martial arts presence. My vote is for Gina Carano in a remake of Bloodsport.

Hate: Complete lack of dialog. This is a bit of a re-hash of The Road Warrior but this seems to avoid dialog to the point of making you miss plot points and not understand what is fully going on.

Love: Tom Hardy’s performance as Max is stellar. He plays someone very much removed from society as a whole very well. I loved all the scenes with him and really enjoyed his performance despite a complete lack of dialog. I think I am just a Hardy fan but either way he is very watchable in this.

Hate: No explanation of anything going on. I understand that they made a comic with the movie that explains most of the stuff but I shouldn’t have to read something before I go watch the movie. The movie is supposed to be the story. If it’s just a big action scene then I feel that it should have been advertised as such. We understand the ‘whats’ of the movie but the ‘whys’ are completely overlooked.

Love: Special and practical effects. Great visuals made the action alive. I really got into the action mostly out of the visuals as opposed to the set up based on the plot.

Hate: People who loved this movie that told me it was the most amazing thing ever. My expectations were too high and it made the movie suck for me more than it should have. I’m not saying this movie sucks but it certainly isn’t as good as the fanboys and circle-jerks made it out to be.

Love: Vehicles, costumes and setting were all on point and felt to be in the same universe as the previous films.

Enough of that, I’m really undecided. A movie is defined as a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images and shown in a theater or on television; a motion picture. So, in the strictest sense, this is a movie. On the other hand, for me a movie needs a plot and character development. So I don’t know if I would classify this as a movie. Mad Max: Fury Road is a great action sequence but not really a full blown movie. I’m torn between whether this was genius or borderline terrible. Maybe it says more about our culture where Mad Max: Fury Road has a higher rotten tomatoes score than original Jurassic Park.

There are a couple movies I still don’t know if they are good or not. Napoleon Dynamite, I’ve seen a couple times and I really don’t know if it’s a genius comedy or just plain weird. Again no real plot but it certainly has a bunch of things happen. Magnolia was just weird but still could be genius. Maybe I’m just kinda dumb but some movies may just be going over my head and I think they could be genius but they are just a higher concept stuff but it’s just out of my reach to realize how dumb it truly is.

I get that good and bad are opinions so really I’m asking myself do I think this is worth the time. I still don’t know. If pressured, I’m going to say I don’t like this movie but I wouldn’t say to avoid it. I guess it’ll be great as a rerun on TV. Mindless action is great for a background show while you are doing other activities. I love the Rambo movies when they are rerun because I don’t have to really pay attention. I think Mad Max: Fury Road will have the same replay value.

Would I remake Mad Max: Fury Road? No. For what it is, it’s great but I really don’t know what it is so I would be a terrible person to say I know how to make this better. If they were going to make more I am not sure how I would feel about that either but I know I would watch it and you should too.

Overall, I would say watch it and form your own opinion since I can’t make one for myself. As always I am Tim McDonald, your movie watching stunt double.
