I don’t think anyone expected to see Taken 3 as the top movie of this weekend, but the fans have spoken. Liam Neeson has the second biggest January opening of all time behind Ride Along and slightly ahead of Cloverfield. The third Tak3n film brought in $40.4million and made it skyrocket against the rest of the competition.

Taken was able to dethrone The Hobbit finally, which came in at the 4th position with $9.4million. The biggest surprise of the weekend really goes to Selma though. The film opened up wide this week and was able to rake in another $11.2million. This should also help its exposure as we come upon Oscar Season. You can see the rest of the Top Ten below.

1. Taken 3 $40.4 million

2. Selma $11.2 million

3. Into the Woods $9.8 million

4. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies $9.4 million

5. Unbroken $8.4 million

6. The Imitation Game $7.6 million

7. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb $6.7 million

8. Annie $4.9 million

9. The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death $4.8 million

10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 $3.8 million

This upcoming weekend should be an interesting one. We have three new movies with some big names that are sure to shake up the Top Ten that’s been standing since before Christmas. Blackhat with Chis Hemsworth, The Wedding Ringer with Kevin Hart, and American Sniper with Bradley Cooper. Since, I’m a big Michael Mann fan, I’d like to see Blackhat make some money; but I’m a bigger Kevin Hart fan and I’d love to see such a hard-working guy take the Top Spot.
