This weekend saw the return of Marvel Studios to the theatre. They released one of their “less-known” characters with Ant-Man. I have to use quotations because if you’re a comic book reader than you know the character as one of the original members of the Avengers. If you’re not a comic book reader, as most of the movie-going audience is not, then you probably saw the movie and didn’t think much of it.

I only say this because the film opened to $58million, which is Marvel’s lowest opening weekend behind The Incredible Hulk. I’m hoping it’s fresh rating on Rotten tomatoes and word of mouth help it gain more money in the coming weeks. On the other hand, Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer’s film, Trainwreck, had a strong opening with $30million and put it in the 3rd position in the Top Ten. You can see the rest of the results below.

1. Ant-Man $58,040,000
2. Minions $50,200,000
3. Trainwreck $30,200,000
4. Inside Out $11,660,000
5. Jurassic World $11,400,000
6. Terminator: Genisys $5,400,000
7. Magic Mike XXL $4,500,000
8. The Gallows $4,005,000
9. Ted 2 $2,700,000
10. Mr. Holmes $2,489,000

The next week will bring the premiere of Pixels. The film is directed by Chris Columbus and stars Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage as video game experts who must save the world from an alien invasion. The film is tracking to make $55million; but i’m not sure that’s very accurate. I think it will come in around $35million and then be lost in obscurity the week after when the next Mission Impossible premieres. Guess we’ll just have to wait til the next edition of Weekend Roundup to find out what happens!
