Unlike you, I actually enjoyed the Constatine film with Keanu Reeves and Bush’s lead singer, Gavin Rossdale. I thought it was very well made and I still watch it from time to time. I guess I can understand why people didn’t dig it, maybe it was the CGI or the fact that Keanu didn’t say “whoa”. Whatever the case may be, DC wants you to forget about all that and focus on Matt Ryan stepping in for the ‘Hellblazer,’ John Constantine. I have to say, they’ve started off good so far.

The Good:

– Matt Ryan playing Constantine. The dude IS Constantine. He looks JUST like the character, is British, and has a swagger about him reminiscent of the comics.

The nods to other DC comics: The Helmet of Nabu, The Ibistick, Pandora’s Box, Jasper Winters, Ravenscar, Astra, Huntoon, and Ritchie Simpson.

– The CGI was good and I liked that it wasn’t too heavy. Just enough to not look cheesy and add to the story, rather than take away from it.

– The humor. John Constantine is a bit of a prick and he doesn’t really let up from that, but he’s a lovable prick. Not only that, the characters that he surrounds himself with tend to play off his attributes and often in a funny way. I was laughing a lot through the pilot, especially at lines like “It says Master, does it? I should really change that to Petty Dabbler. I hate to put on airs.”

The Bad:

– Liv Aberdine’s character played by Lucy Griffiths leaving after the first episode after the whole premise of the first episode sets her up as being integral to the plot of the show.

– Not that I don’t condone smoking, but it’s a HUGE part of the character and I feel that they took it out of the show because it’s on NBC

– Being on that Friday night timeslot. I only hope that Grimm’s viewers will pay attention to this as well. Also, that Hulu and the other streaming services count towards ratings
