Abbie and Ichabod sense of duty to the role of being the Witnesses is tested this week as they battle Henry once again, but he is not alone, Katrina joins with Henry.  A bond between mother and son has always been widely known as unbreakable and loving.  For a very long time, Katrina has mentioned time and again that Henry can be saved and that he is her son.  She has put a wedge between Abbie and Ichabod, pitting them against each other between being a father and a Witness.  Sleepy Hollow Awakening 02After the encounter with Solomon Kent, Katrina has embraced her dark side and started to practice blood magic.  With that extra push, Henry can finally convince her of his plan to resurrect her coven and begin a powerful dynasty of witches with him and Katrina as their leader of this coven.

Ichabod and Abbie begin to suspect that Henry is using Sleepy Hollow’s town bell to start the “Awakening” spell found in the Grand Grimoire.  He plans to use Katrina’s pure blood heritage to amplify to spell and complete the ritual.  The only way for Ichabod and Abbie to stop them is to crack the bell.  Their scene in the hardware store, trying to get materials to build a bomb, is pretty hilarious.  Ichabod still amuses me when he tries to understand our culture and why we do the things we do.  Abbie is just as comical when she tries to explain things to him.

Jenny tells Abbie and Ichabod that Frank has been lying to them ever since he returned from the dead.  This part of the story reminds me of Pet Cemetery, where things never return right.  They decide to use the Gorgon’s head to suspend Frank in stone until they figure out what to do with him.  But right now they have more important matters to deal with.

Abbie and Ichabod finally get the town bell and is about to take it to safe place to destroy it when Henry and Katrina arrive to stop them.  Katrina finally shows her true face to Ichabod, and it is pretty ugly.  For all the seasons I have watched this show, I get ulcers when Katrina appears on the screen.  There is always something there that doesn’t feel right about her.  She confesses to him that she is fool, to believe that she can be involved with a mortal man.  Her feelings towards the Headless Horseman felt more genuine than with Ichabod. Her demeanor and personality changes right before our eyes.  She is blinded by Henry’s dream.

Jenny has problems of her own.  Frank has found her and demands that she tells him where his family is.  Jenny refuses to give Frank the whereabouts of his wife and daughter.  He says that everything will be alright, because when Katrina rings the bell and the ritual starts, Cindy and Macey will be turned into witches.

Katrina and Henry are able to take the bell from Abbie and Ichabod and head toward the town hall.  But Ichabod is there going face to face with his son.  He finally gets the courage to shoot Henry, but this is a disstraction for Abbie to drive a car toward him.  Katrina stops the car just in time, but it gives Abbie time to place charges on the bell.  She is stopped by Katrina and Henry and is tied to a stake, ready to be burned, along with Ichabod.  Ichabod tries to plead once again with Katrina to stop this, but she has made her choice, and so has Ichabod.  Sleepy Hollow Awakening 01Ichabod and Abbie break free and shoots the bell, knowing that Henry would stop it, Abbie then shoots Henry and mortally wounds him.  With Henry wounded, Irving’s soul gets released from Henry’s hold.  With Henry’s last breath, he is able to see his parents together one last time.  For a small moment, Henry is at peace.  Then his body just vanishes.  Ichabod tries to console Katrina, but she lashes out and blames Ichabod for all her sorrows.  She grabs the Grand Grimiore and conjures up a time traveling spell to bring her to colonial times.  Abbie runs after her and vanishes.

The end of this episode sets up for the other half of the series finale.  I am a little confused, because sources tells me that this the end of the series, but the preview for next week says it is the season finale.  Anyways, this episode did not disappoint.  Katrina is one tough adversary to defeat.  A mother’s love, a father’s difficult choice, and a loss of a child are something everybody deals some time in their lives.  We get to see that in this one episode and it is a whopper.  Next week, everything will all come to an end.
