For some time, it’s been fairly common for actors and actresses from television and movies to act in shows on Broadway. But this fall, there seems to be an even larger abundance of stars who will appear on The Great White Way. Whether you live in New York or are visiting the city for a few days, there are ample opportunities to see some of your favorite Hollywood stars on Broadway. Check for tickets for the following six stars featured on marquees this fall:
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ewan McGregor in “The Real Thing”
Gyllenhaal will make her Broadway debut in October when she stars in “The Real Thing,” a revival of a romantic drama, claims New York Theatre Guide. Gyllenhaal’s character Annie is an actress, who catches the eye of a playwright, played by Ewan McGregor.
Gyllenhaal appeared with her brother Jake in the movie “Donnie Darko” in 2001 and received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in “Sherrybaby.” Her performance in “Crazy Heart” in 2009 earned her an Oscar nomination. McGregor, on the other hand, is known for his many roles including Obi-Wan Kenobi in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, Ed Bloom in “Big Fish” and Christian in “Moulin Rouge.”
The play will be at American Airlines Theatre on S 42nd St.
Megan Mullally and Matthew Broderick in “It’s Only a Play”
This comedy tells the story of what goes on behind the scenes during opening night. “It’s Only a Play” stars Megan Mullally as playwright Peter Austin’s novice producer. As New York notes, audience members who have been part of a theater production will be sure to understand and appreciate the variety of inside theater jokes.
Mullally is well-known by her fans as playing Karen Walker on the TV hit “Will and Grace.” Austin is played by actor Matthew Broderick, who has also starred on the big screen. He played the charming, yet unmotivated teen in the 1986 hit “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” voiced the adult Simba in “The Lion King” and starred with Jim Carrey in “The Cable Guy.”
The play opens on October 9 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on W 45th St.
Hugh Jackman in “The River”
Jackman is taking a break from playing the superhero Wolverine to play a fisherman who takes his girlfriend on a trip to a cabin out in the middle of nowhere. “The River” received positive reviews in London for its masterful use of suspense and will offer preview performances starting on Halloween. The actual opening date is in mid-November.
Although Jackman is getting a lot of current press for his role in the various “X-Men” movies, his career goes well beyond playing a mutant superhero. For example, Jackman is also well-known for playing Jean Valjean in the movie adaption of “Les Miserables.” This play is perfect for people who want to see how a superhero can tackle the role of someone who prefers catching trout to villains.
The play will be performed at Circle in the Square Theater on Broadway.
Michael Cera in “This Is Our Youth”
Kenneth Lonergan’s off-Broadway comedy, “This Is Our Youth,” opened on Broadway on September 11. As Time notes, the play tells the tale of privileged teens who have no clue about what they want to do in life. It stars Michael Cera, who starred in movies like “Juno” and “Superbad,” as a rich kid who steals $15K from his dad.
Performances are at the Cort Theatre on W 48th St.
