Why not start dad’s morning out right with breakfast in bed? Plan your menu in advance and prepare all of his favorite breakfast items. Keep the coffee brewed hot, newspaper on the tray and add a little flower in a vase for a special touch. If it is possible, plan breakfast as an unexpected surprise so he has no idea you are making the day about him. When he is finished, treat him to a game of golf, a date at the gym or a walk around the neighborhood.

Challenge Him to a Video Game Tournament

Does your dad love friendly competition and playing video games? Find out the games he loves and set up the ultimate man cave. Have popcorn and nuts for snacks, order pizza for lunch and stock his favorite brews so he can enjoy his gaming experience. To make things interesting, challenge him to a video game duel — winner gets treated to dinner. This opportunity will give you and your dad a way to bond. Don’t be surprised if he’s pleased to have time to impart some of his wisdom (and jokes) in-between games and during breaks.

Allow Him an Opportunity to Teach

Your dad is the type who loves to share his knowledge. Why not allow him the opportunity to teach you something new? Ask him to teach you how to drive a stick shift, or, if you’re new to the whole idea, how to drive at all. Start by reviewing permit practice test questions online and then take what you learn and test it out on the road. Does your dad know another language? Ask him for lessons. If he knows Italian, treat him to an Italian restaurant and ask him to order in the language. Does he know Spanish? Ask him to help you conjugate verbs or better yet help you complete your homework. Your dad will definitely feel young and relevant again with this simple gesture from you.

Host a Movie Marathon

How does your dad like to relax? Does he regularly request a night in to enjoy movies? This is your cue to plan a movie marathon with him in the comforts of home or at the theater. If at home, unplug his phone, set up some cozy cushions and blankets on the couch and pull out some of the movies he loves watching from his past. If he’s all about the big screen experience, make sure to throw theater popcorn and candy in the mix.

Head Outdoors

For the dad who loves all things sports, plan a day dedicated to enjoying a game at the ballpark, throwing the football in the backyard or bouncing the basketball on the court. If he loves to hike, scope out particular trails he enjoys and gear up for some bonding time in the middle of nature. If he loves to camp, why not make his special day an all-nighter? Look up local campgrounds and reserve a spot where the two of you can spend the evening roasting marshmallows in front of the fire.
