Last week doing this for awhile. Oh, writing the article I mean! Not collecting comics!! These funny books are forever tethered to my soul, especially when it comes to variant covers! So enjoy what I’m picking up and what I wish I was also picking up today!
Captain America #10 (Marvel) (W) Ta-Nehisi Coates (A) Adam Kubert (CA) Alex Ross
Well this one isn’t a variant but if you are a fan of Alex Ross and you haven’t picked this series up then what are you waiting for. Not only do the covers look brilliant but the writing by Coates is top notch and Kubert is on point with his art.
Hawkman #12 (DC) (W) Robert Venditti (A/CA) Bryan Hitch
Love me some Hawkman but I am sad to see artist Bryan Hitch departing after these stellar 12 issues. Will Conrad (Buffy, Angel) will be taking over duties and helping Venditti paint this amazing story that we have been riding for the past year!
Batman Who Laughs #5 (of 6) (DC) (W) Scott Snyder (A) Jock (CA) Viktor Kalvachev
These variant covers are great, creepy-ass pieces of work that only help sell this character. We are nearing the end and with news of the new Secret Six coming, how will this all end? Find out nex month!
Batman and the Outsiders #1 (DC) (W) Bryan Hill (A) Dexter Soy (CA) Stejpan Sejic
I’ve been looking forward to this series for awhile now as it was pushed back for some reason or another. I have always been a fan of this team of characters!
Shazam #5 (DC) (W) Geoff Johns (A) Dale Eaglesham (CA) Rafael Albuquerque
I am a sucker for Capt.. er Shazam! and I love what Johns has done with him throughout the last decade. The movie was fun and I am glad that Shazam! has come to the forefront of the comic world. Rafael Albuquerque is delivering some amazing variant lately and this is no different!
Wonder Twins #4 (of 6) (DC) (W) Mark Russell (A) Stephen Byrne (CA) Rafael Albuquerque
Like I said Albuquerque is a busy man! I didn’t think I would enjoy this series THIS MUCH. Gone are the days of Super Friends and our favorite Twins are in the modern day now!
Jim Henson’s The Storyteller Sirens #2 (Boom! Studios) (W) Chan Chau (A/CA) Chan Chau
When a writer does double, or should I say triple duties, I am always impressed. I love that this series exists as I was a big fan of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller. If you are in to Chinese mythology then this book is for you!
Alien Resistance #4 (Dark Horse) (W) Brian Wood (A) Robert Carey (CA) Tristan Jones
Big fan of Tristan Jones especially when he is doing Aliens stuff! I have not read this story yet and will probably wait until it’s over. So much on the list ya know!?
Black Hammer Age of Doom #10 (Dark Horse) (W) Jeff Lemire (A) Dean Ormston (CA) Michel Fiffe
With Black Hammer picking up steam across different medias, the comics are still going strong. The Justice League crossover is starting a couple months and that’s exciting too! As I always say, I would follow Jeff Lemire anywhere and I am excited to see what happens with the future of Black Hammer!
Red Sonya and Vampirella meet Betty and Veronica #1 (Dynamite) (W) Amy Chu (A)Maria Sanapo (CA) Francesco Francavilla
Weird stuff is happening over at Archie Comics and this is only a piece of the pie. What a weird crossover this and we will have to see how it plays out. I have enjoyed the paranormal stuff as of late and this is def going on the list. I love this variant by Francavilla to boot!
Hit-Girl Season Two #4 (Image) (W) Kevin Smith (A) Pernille Orum (CA) Amanda Conner
Whenever Amanda Conner’s name comes up I’m sold. Her art to me is top-notch and I love her variants. Kevin Smith continues to help build the Hit-Girl mythos and Millarworld gets better and better by the month. Now Netflix just needs to get that ball rolling so I can watch me some Millarworld!
Conan the Barbarian #6 (Marvel) (W) Jason Aaron (A) Mahmud A. Asrar (CA) Esad Ribic
Ahhh Jason Aaron, what a master of this genre. I was skeptical about all the Conan going on at Marvel but I was wrong, very fucking wrong. We need more barbarian tales in our lives.
Star Wars Age of Rebellion: Boba Fett #1 (Marvel) (W) Greg Pak (A) Marc Laming
Finally today, Marvel continues its onslaught of Star Wars titles and we are now in the Age of Rebellion. Boba Fett has always been a favorite of mine and I look forward to reading some new backstory on this mysterious character. Check out the original concept design for the character on this issues variant cover!
That’s it for me for a bit Towelites! Our boy Clay is back in the house so make sure to check out Top of the Stack every Wednesday here on DFAT!!
