We’re back for another exciting season of the crazy time traveling alien and his assistant. Right off the bat, the Doctor faces a person that he never expected to see and makes a decision that will haunt him forever. Our old enemy is back, the Daleks to put a wrench in the Doctor’s life. Missy makes a Lazarus appearance in order to get the help from Clara and U.N.I.T. to find the Doctor and honor his wishes from his Last Will and Testament. Well that pretty much sums it up…I don’t think so. There is much more to this story.
When we last saw the Doctor and Clara, they were happy and anxious to continue their journey through time and space. It left a pleasant and heartfelt feeling in your heart. Things look rather bleak and dreadful in the first five minutes of this episode. The Doctor is on a battlefield with some really cool looking landmines, or should I “hand”mines. If you can imagine your worst nightmare of being grabbed, then this tops it. The Doctor tries to help this lost child in the “hand”minefield, but then changes his mind when he finds out who this child is, Davros. This single act will be the crucial point where everything changes for the Doctor.
Davros, now old and disfigured, sends his henchman/messenger, Colony Sarf to find the Doctor and bring him to him and to answer for his crime. Davros is not the only one who is looking for the Doctor. U.N.I.T, Missy, and Clara need to find him, but each them have their own reasons. Kate Stewart, the Head of U.N.I.T, needs the Doctor’s help with a little atmospheric problem, Missy needs him to fullfill his final wishes of his Last Will, and Clara just needs him to come back for her. Clara is shocked that Missy is alive, because she saw the Doctor vaporize her in the cemetery after they defeated Missy’s plan. They put their rivalry and hatred aside to help locate the Doctor. Clara tries to understand why Missy is helping her find him, and comes to the conclusion that she turned good. Missy squashed that assumption by immediately killing a few U.N.I.T soldiers nearby. She tells her that the Doctor is an old friend and is here to fulfill a Time Lord’s last wishes. They find the Doctor in medieval times at a gathering that looks like a Renaissance Fair in New Jersey. Bors, a heavy set bloke appears in the middle of the arena and introduces the Doctor. Clara and Missy sees in disbelief a rather skinny man, dressed in a black hoodie and a t-shirt carrying an electric guitar playing rock tunes rather horribly. Clara reaches the Doctor and asks where he has been. He only tells her that he has been traveling to reminisce all the good times. Missy then appears to him and tells him that she has received his confession dial and understands what needs to be done. Just then Colony Sarf appears and demands that the Doctor come with him to see Davros. The Doctor wants to know why. Sarf simply says: Davros knows, Davros remembers, and that he is dying. He then pulls out the sonic screwdriver that the Doctor gave Davros when he was a child in the “hand”mine field. He immediately surrenders to Sarf out of guilt and shame, but Missy and Clara decide to surrender as well. On Sarf’s ship, Clara gets an education and history about who is Davros, and the origin of the Daleks from the Doctor. He also tells her about the extremely difficult decisions he has had to make in the past and the consequences that resulted from them.
They reach their destination, a space station floating in space. While waiting in a cell, Clara confronts him about the resurrection of Missy and why she got his Will and Confession Dial and not her. He can only say that Missy and him go way back since childhood and apologizes to her about lying. She just wants her Doctor back that is all.
The Doctor gets summoned by Davros. He blames the Doctor for everything that has been done to him, and wants him to admit that emotions and compassion is pointless to have when it comes to deciding that fate of one’s destiny. While the Doctor is entertaining Davros, Missy and Clara come to realize that they are not in space, but actually on a planet hidden in plain sight. For the first time, we see her extremely frightened. Clara is puzzled as to why. Missy tells her that they are on the home planet of the Daleks, Skaro. They are taken by the Daleks to a holding chamber where the TARDIS is there as well. Davros has them on a monitor where the Doctor can see them. He tells the Doctor that he no longer has control over them, but will enjoy watching his friends die at the hands of his creation. Suddenly the Daleks open fire and Clara and Missy are vaporized. The Doctor is in disbelief and somehow escapes and reaches the TARDIS. He goes back to the hand”mine field to where the young Davros is still trapped. The Doctor aims a weapon at him and says “EXTERMINATE”.
The season opener reveals a lot. Missy is back, Skaro is back, and the Doctor is in a very dark place right now. His past demons are haunting him and his friends are paying the price. What will he do next? We will see next week.
