The fog still surrounds Haven, but that is not the main problem right now. Nathan is public enemy number one with the people of Haven, especially Kira’s fiancé Tony. After returning from the power plant, Nathan tells him that Kira is dead.. Feeling enraged, Tony accuses Nathan of abandoning her and blaming him for her death. The Darkness Trouble is still out there and time is running out for the people seeking shelter in the school. Tony wants to punish Nathan by exiling him outside for the Darkness Trouble to kill him.
While Tony stirs up the people to his side, Nathan quietly tells Dwight and Audrey that Kira is in fact alive and back in the cave with the Aether. She is trapped with a sprained ankle and her feet are trapped under some rocks. The Darkness is all around her and a single light source is keeping the Darkness from killing her. Nathan is afraid that if people know Kira is alive and the Aether may be a cure, they will go after her and get themselves killed. So he chose to refrain from telling them the truth. To avoid Nathan from getting lynched, Audrey gets the idea of putting him on trial to let the people decide his fate, that way Dwight and Charlotte can go to the cave and rescue Kira and buy Nathan some time. Implementing an old Athenian trial procedure, Vince explains that Nathan and Tony get the chance to plead their case to the people.
The trial of Nathan Wournos begins. Tony starts by suggesting that Nathan is selfish and willing to sacrifice the lives of others to keep Audrey safe. As the trial proceeds, Nathan is starting to get suspicious that the information Tony acquired for his case is supplied by an outside source with a vendetta against him, but Tony denies it. Nathan asks Vince, Dave, and Audrey to find a loop hole in the law and procedure, because he feels the evidence against him is too strong. He also asks Audrey to hurry and find who has the Darkness Trouble before it is too late. Kira doesn’t have mush time and her Electricity Trouble is running out.
Audrey uses her detective skills and finds a witness who can describe the one person who survived the Darkness Trouble. She is looking for a person with a beard and a yellow bandana. Unfortunately, the eyewitness, Faber, is also looking this bearded man and using process of elimination to find the real killer by throwing any bearded man into the dark. If they survive, then he found the culprit. Audrey stops him from killing her deaf Trouble friend Grayson with the help of the Guard. However, they are not one step closer to finding the Darkness Trouble person.
Dwight and Charlott trek through the town toward the cave,but it is very awkward for the both of them. They didn’t leave on great terms. Luckily they are able to talk it out and come to an understanding. Charlotte truly believes that the Aether is the key to curing the people, but they would need lots of it. She tells him about a great evil that lives in the Void between the Thinny. She believes that this evil slipped out and entered into your world and killed the townspeople of Roanoke and now it has entered into the world again and starts killing people.
Back in the outside world, Duke is trying to help Hailie sharpen her Trouble curse. It works but she wants to use it to rob bank. After a few heated words, Duke gives in. After the bank robbery is complete, a security guard confronts him and shoots Hailie in the shoulder. Her blood gets on Duke. His Trouble curse kicks in and his blood lust takes over. Hailie is now running from Duke. She successfully evades him and traps him in a cargo hold.
Nathan’s trial is continuing. He makes a plea to the people about how much he loves this town and will do anything to save it. It’s a very touching speech, very moving.
Audrey finds out that Tony is the Darkness Trouble that emits negativity all around him due to the fact that Kira broke the engagement and Tony is in denial. She finally reaches through him and the Darkness is lifted. Dwight and Charlotte finally reach the cave and save Kira in the process. Charlotte is amazed as to how much Aether is there. Kira, Dwight, Charlotte walks into the school before a verdict is called. This saves Nathan.
Audrey gets nowhere with Tony as to who gave him the damaging information on Nathan. He said he blacked out and when he woke up there was a file folder with Nathan’s information. Audrey finds her bearded friend Grayson in a catatonic state, but she gets ambushed by the Sandman, a Sleeping Trouble.
Nathan has a secret admirer with a grudge. Duke is fighting his Troubles and Hailie is in the crossfire. Dwight and Charlotte seem to be reconciling their differences, and Audrey is in la-la land courtesy of the Sandman. Next week Nathan is fighting a nightmare with Audrey’s life hanging in the balance.
