We left off last season where the Darkness has been unleashed and a large black billowy cloud is rushing up behind the Winchesters getting ready to envelope them. This episode is the aftermath and the fallout of this horrific event. We find Sam alone in the car where Dean is outside in the black fog. Dean is a mile away in a meadow field. Sam finds him and is baffled as to how Dean got there. Castiel is still affected by Rowena’s spell and tries to keep himself away from people. He fears he might involuntary harm anyone who gets in his way. Unfortunately, a father and his two sons encounter him, but Cass is able to resist his urge to kill them. Crowley has lost his original meat suit and ends up in a middle age menopausal women whose husband is waiting for her at home in order for them to have a four way orgy.
Dean and Sam head toward the local town to find a bloodbath blocking their way in the highway. A road crew and a family are savagely killed and left for dead on the road. Suddenly a single road worker approaches ready to attack them until a female deputy shoots and kills him. Dean notices something in the road workers neck. Several veins of black fluid flow through his body and Dean and Sam suspect it is the Darkness that has infected the road crew. They head towards into town where they drive to the hospital to patch the deputy’s wounded leg. What they find in the hospital is a bloodbath. Sam fears that the Darkness has reached the town and people are starting to kill one another.
Castiel is in desperate need of help and feels he has no choice but to contact Heaven for angelic assistance. He is haunted and tortured with images of what he has done to Crowley. He is in really bad shape. Crowley on the other hand is stuck in a female body who just had wild crazy sex when his minions find him. They are somewhat puzzled and disgusted that their king and master let himself succumb to the weakness and desires of the humans. Crowley finally gets his original meatsuit back, but receives some very bad news, the Darkness has been unleashed and that Michael and Lucifer are acting up, trying to warn them about the Darkness.
Back at the hospital, Dean and Sam struggle to come up with a plan to stop these infected attackers. They meet a father with his baby who was just born today. Mike, the father is unfortunately infected but the effects are not showing right away. Sam and Dean are struggling to agree on a plan to get out of this mess. Dean is still holding to his old hunting ways, kill now ask questions later, and save the baby. Sam feels that the infected is like a fever, the rage and madness will burn itself out. Mike gives them an alternative solution; he leaves and let the infection carry its course hoping he won’t kill anyone in the process. He asks the female deputy to watch over the baby when he his gone, she does. More of the infected storm the hospital and look for them. Sam comes up with a plan where he lures the infected away while Dean and the deputy make a run for it. It works, but Sam gets infected.
Cass calls Dean on the phone to say goodbye, knowing it is a one way trip to Heaven. His plan backfires when his fellow angles kidnap him to somewhere unknown.
Dean and the deputy find Mike and tries very hard to not to kill him in front of his child. Mike names the baby Amara before he lets them go and dies from the infection. The next day Dean says goodbye to the female deputy and Amara and put her on a bus out of town. Dean has flashbacks of his conversation with the Darkness. She tells him that they bound forever because of the Mark of Cain. She shows Dean the Mark on her back. She says, “You helped me escape and I will help you. Where ever you are, whoever I am, I will always be with you”. Back at the bus depot the deputy notices a strange birthmark on Amara, it looks like the shape of the Mark.
The Winchester stirred up a hornets nest this time. Their greatest challenge is ahead of them. How can they fight something so old, and powerful? It looks like the Mark is not completely done with Dean. The Mark is on Amara, and Dean has no idea it latched onto her, but he will soon find out. Sam is a walking time bomb with the infection coursing through his veins. Castiel is taken, and Crowley gets a warning from Michael and Lucifer about the Darkness. Next week should be interesting now that we are getting closer to Halloween.
