The Winchesters split up their team to handle two different tasks for the same mission. Sam is on the hunt for any information about the infected in Superior Nebraska, while Dean is driving Jenna (the young deputy they met at the initial encounter with the Darkness) and baby Amara to her grandma’s house for safety in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Castiel is having a really bad day when his angelic brothers, Efram and Jonah, take him to be interrogated about the location of Metatron.
Dean meets Jenna’s grandma, who reminds me of Aunt Bea from the Andy Griffith Show. Although she doesn’t bake pies, her demeanor and personality personifies a wholesome religious person that has a smile that can light up a room. But because we are living in a world that has gone to the dogs, Aunt Bea’s attitude immediately changes when Amara uses her telekinetic abilities to convey that she is hungry by spelling “Feed Me” with toy blocks that she flew at the wall. Amara doesn’t mess around. Aunt Bea immediately calls a priest to exorcize the demon out of her. Dean is already heading towards Sam when Jenna calls him back. Amusingly Dean gets a surprise when he reaches Jenna. Crowley poses as the priest to exorcize Amara. Dean finds out that Crowley is interested in Amara’s ability and his curiosity got the better of him. Unfortunately Jenna kills her grandma without provocation and chases after Dean and Crowley. Crowley had to put her down and makes an astonishing discovery, Jenna has no soul and Amara is missing. Dean figures that Amara is a soul eater and a demon, but Crowley disagrees. He concludes that Amara is something OLD, DEEP, and DARK, and that intrigues him. Crowley wants her alive, Dean wants Amara dead, and Amara slips out into the dark.
Sam has captured an infected victim of the Darkness. His interrogation is not going well. Sam tries to be civil and asks him his name. “Bite me,” the man replies. So Sam just goes with it and dubs him ‘Bite Me’ to identify him. He asks Bite Me how long has he been infected. He replies a few day. He also mentions that the infected rate of change varies with each person. Bite Me adds that he wants to die and asks Sam to do it. Sam tries to reassure him he is trying to cure the infected. Bite Me refuses to believe that there is one, and suddenly just dies. A Reaper shows up doing her duty when Sam appears. She is here on business, but gives him a message for both Dean and Sam. Their trek through life and death is over, that when they die, their souls will not go to Heaven nor Hell. It will just go to the Empty and nothing comes out of that. Billie, the Reapers name, knows that Sam is dying. He is unclean, biblically, and she will see him real soon. Extremely concerned about Billie’s warning, Sam heads to the hospital’s chapel and prays really hard for God to help him and Dean. He asks for any sign, instead he gets visions of him being tortured and in pain that resembles scenes from Hellraiser. Sam remembers what Billie told him, that he is unclean biblically, so he looks up anything about purification of the unholy and finds that Holy Oil may be his answer. He douses a cotton swab with Holy Oil and lights it on fire. Immediately and painfully the infected blood disappears within him. Trying out his new discovery on a few infected victims, Sam is able to cure them from the Darkness. Score a victory for the home team!
Castiel is hung and chained up like a piece of meat and tortured by his angelic brothers. They want to know where Metatron is, since he is the one who freed him. They question his loyalty between the Winchesters and Heaven. Hannah walks in and puts a stop to this, but her affection towards Castiel has changed. She feels betrayed by him and wants to know where Metatron is hiding. Castiel figures out that Hannah, who is in a new body, is playing him and set him up for being tortured and interrogated. Castiel expresses his disappoint with her, and also mentions that something more horrible and menacing is threatening the universe, the Darkness. But Hannah refuses to believe that, and the Darkness is just a story. Hannah orders Efram and Jonah to put Castiel in the head extractor and get the information out of him painfully. Cass is seen screaming in pain from the contraption.
Dean and Sam meet at the bunker of the Men of Letters and finds Cass on the floor seriously wounded. The last scene of the episode is where Crowley meets up with Amara who is now a child, about ten years of age and lures her into a van filled with innocent victims for her to feed.
Next week, my favorite witch is back, Rowena and she is stirring up more trouble for the Winchesters
