with Release of “Fantasy Camp” Roleplaying Game
We’ve all heard of Christmas in July, but for fans of the
Wet Hot American Summer franchise, it’s summer camp for the holidays! That’s because the officially licensed tabletop roleplaying game based on the cult classic film —
Wet Hot American Summer: Fantasy Camp — hits shelves this November, after a
successful Kickstarter launch earlier this year by Devastator Press.
Since learning what happened to the Camp Firewood crew “
10 Years Later” in August, fans are ready to have their own adventures at the fictional 1980s summer camp. While it remains to be seen whether
Wet Hot co-creators David Wain and Michael Showalter will revisit Camp Firewood for a fourth time, thanks to the roleplaying game, fans won’t have to wait to enjoy new adventures with Coop, Beth, Gene, and Andy.
After overfunding on Kickstarter, The Devastator showed appreciation to the backers by shipping a month ahead of schedule. Backers of the Kickstarter (aka “Campers”) have taken to Twitter to share their excitement for the unusual RPG. (Such as @SeanMcGurr, @Ninjanomics101, @JoshAndHisJokes, @Kerry_Klug, and @purdymaryk.)
Fantasy Camp game designers Geoffrey Golden and Lee Keeler hit the road this year, demonstrating the game for comedy nerds and gamers at San Diego Comic-Con, ID10T Fest, and New York Comic Con. “Fan reaction to the game has been incredible,” says Golden. “Both RPG experts and people who’ve never played one before are loving this game. Who would’ve guessed D&D would benefit from more fridge humping?”
Fantasy Camp is a game for comedy fans, casual gamers, and more skilled players alike. “We took a classic tabletop RPG engine, but replaced all the crazy math with improv and party game elements,” says Keeler. Players can create their own campers and counselors, or play as beloved characters from the film like Victor, Katie, and yes, even the Can of Mixed Vegetables. The manual also includes a forward from David Wain and interviews with cast members Michael Ian Black (“McKinley”), Marguerite Moreau (“Katie”), and Joe Lo Truglio (“Neil”).
