This week we get to meet mutant skateboarding gecko that mirrors the same spacey attitude as Mikey. Mikey and Casey Jones decide to take a wild night out shredding the roofs and sewers with their skateboards and rollerblades. After skating around awhile, they stumble upon a teenage mutant gecko named Jason. Immediately Mikey feels some sort of connection with him. He decides to dub him Mondo Gecko. While these three get to know each other, they witness the Purple Dragons make off with valuable stolen merchandise. Casey and Mikey try to stop them, but the Dragons are not alone, their leader Hun is with them. While Mikey takes care of the Purple Dragons, Casey fights Hun one on one. Using his Bruce Lee style martial art technique, Hun gives Casey a horrible beating. Trying to help him, Mikey and Mondo step in, but they are also no match for Hun’s fighting skills. During the fight, Hun trips on Mondo’s skateboard and falls down the building and into a dumpster. After Casey binds the Purple Dragons for the cops to take them, Mondo invites them to his place, but Casey has a funny feeling about their new friend, and doesn’t trust him. Mikey brushes it off goes off with him.
Mondo’s character is a combination of the old TMNT cartoon and mixed with the new. He uses the old battle cry “Cowabunga” whenever he rides his skateboard, while showing us very cool and exciting new moves on his board.
Unfortunately, Casey is right not to trust him. Mikey walks into a trap set by Mondo’s boss, Mr. X, we all know him as Xever, or Fishface. He told Mondo that the Turtles are bad and on the streets it’s every mutant for themselves. Casey is there as well and Fishface plans to use them as unwilling participants in a death race through the sewers as entertainments for all the evil mutants to watch. Fishface references a quote from the film, The Warriors, as he introduces Casey, Mikey, and Mondo to the crowd. “Can you dig it?!!!” Fishface yells to the crowd. They go wild with excitement.
Knowing Fishface, the race will be filled with traps, and deadly weapons created to slow down or kill his opposition. It’s a wild ride watching Mondo, Mikey, and Casey dodge, jump, and barely escape Fishface’s deadly distractions. Even though with all of Fishface’s traps, Mondo ended up winning the race by a tongue. Realizing that Mr. X, or Fishface deceived him, Mondo helps Mikey and Casey chase him out of the sewer.
I’m not sure what kind of help Mondo can give the Turtles in the fight against Shredder and his evil mutants, but he definitely delivers a lot of comedic material for the show. Plus Mikey has someone he can hang out and shred some pavements and roofs with.
Next week, the Turtles fight the mind controlled Karai. Raph gets attacked by Karai and the poison is killing him.
