The shape formed in his hands like it was but an extension of his ego. Something primal had taken over, he was no longer Ed, he was but a missionary of some unknown force. Soon he could tell that the wooden block in his hand had become something like a figure. Strange features and penetrating eyes in the palm in his hand.

Justice League Dark #1 (DC)

James Tynion IV (W) Raul Fernandez (A)

I have been waiting for this book since they announced it. I love Tynion and he has a killer team lineup in this book. Any book with my boy Swampy gets the thumbs up for me. Also, if you’re so inclined, check out the Capullo variant, he makes bearded Swampy look extra fine.

The New World #1 (Image)

Ales Kot (W) Tradd Moore (A)

Okay, I know I just said this, but I have been looking forward to this book since they announced it, which was like two years ago at the Image Expo. I’ve put in my dues, give me this pretty, pretty book. I need it.

X-Men: Grand Designs-Second Genesis #1 (Marvel)

Ed Piskor (W/A)

This is less a #1 and more like a continuation of his previous series. If you didn’t read Grand Design, you missed one of the strongest love letters to the X-men that has ever been written. Piskor really digs this material and he does his fucking research. I’ve learned a lot about these characters that I never knew. On another not, I hope he keeps adding to this title. Like, it becomes so long that the title is the whole cover.

Wonder Woman #51 (DC)

Steve Orlando (W) Laura Braga (A)

Again, not really a number one, but a new team, briefly, until G.WILLOW FUCKING WILSON takes over WW. I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY. That’s in the future, and honestly, I think Orlando and Braga are gonna kill it on this arc. Less filler, more killer.

Blackwood #3 (of 4) (Dark Horse)

Evan Dorkin (W) Veronica Fish (A)

I really like the premise of this book. I love it, actually. Harry Potter meets Cthulhu is a great idea, and on top of that, it’s the Scooby Gang. I love it. I just feel like something didn’t click completely in the first two issues for me. A lot of this stuff is subjective and definitely depends on your mood when you read it, so take that as you will.

X-O Manowar #17 (Valiant)

Matt Kindt (W) Trevor Hairsine (A)

I think the story got a little wrapped up in the Harbinger Wars stuff last issue, and you all know how that makes me feel. That being said, this has yet to be a bad book, so I guess I can suck it up.

The Punisher #228 (Marvel)

Matthew Rosenberg (W) Guiu Vilanova (A)

I feel like this was inevitable. You can’t go flying around in someone’s best friend’s suit and not expect him to fly right up to you and hit you in the face with a wicked sick repulsion blast.

The Sentry #2 (Marvel)

Jeff Lemire (W) Kim Jacinto (A)

I don’t really know all that much about this dude, but this series is promising. Hasn’t been my favorite of Lemire’s recent works but there is still plenty of time for me to eat my entire foot. There is always time for that.

Moon Knight #197 (Marvel)

Max Bemis (W) Jacen Burrows (A)

This series has been really solid. The last arc was goofy and beautiful and different from any Moon Knight comic I’ve ever read. I trust that the rest of this series is going to carry that momentum. I expect the next arc to be similarly bonkers.

Multiple Man #2 (of 5) (Marvel)

Matthew Rosenberg (W) Andy MacDonald (A)

I loved the first issue of this book. Rosenberg really seems to have a great grasp on these characters and is bringing them home, in a sense. I expect Matthew to get even more work in this part of the Marvel universe soon. You, know, besides Astonishing…

Redneck #13 (Image)

Donny Cates (W) Lisandro Estherren (A)

Everyone’s favorite southern vampire comic is back on the shelves. I’m excited to see what becomes of the Bowman family after the last arc. Just when things are the worst, they seem to get even worse. Just like my life. That’s why I like this book about vampires.

The Silencer #7 (DC)

Dan Abnett (W) Viktor Bogdanovic (A)

This book is a hidden gem I think. A lot of these New Age of Heroes books are going to go the way of the dodo, that being said, I think that this one may stick around. Even if she just pops up occasionally in some Batman book or something.

Doomsday Clock #6 (DC)

Geoff Johns (W) Gary Frank (A)

Jesus fuck. Finally. You know it’s really hard to invest in a book that comes out every two months. I know they did this to make sure they can reach their deadlines, but I mean, it’s almost better to just wait until this is collected to read it all at once.

Old Man Logan #44 (Marvel)

Ed Brisson (W) Juan Ferreyra (A)

Just got news that this series is going to end at issue 50. I’m not even upset about it. It’s a phenomenal book and even in spite of the creator switch ups. I couldn’t have imagined that it would ever last this long, and I’m glad we still have a little while left.

Moonshine #12 (Image)

Brian Azzarello (W) Eduardo Risso (A)

This arc has been weird to say the least. The two main plots have been running parallel but I still have yet to see if and how they are actually connected. Maybe this issue ties that up for me, maybe I don’t always get what I want. Surprise.

The Realm #8 (Image)

Seth M. Peck (W) Jeremy Haun (A)

This book has that long drawn out storytelling style that books like the Walking Dead have. They focus less on big blockbuster arcs and more on the minuscule developments that build up over time. That alone makes me think that this book is going to have a massive shelf life.

Venom #4 (Marvel)

Donny Cates (W) Ryan Stegman (A)

STILL. BETTER. THAN. WATCHMEN.

The Terrifics #6 (DC)

Jeff Lemire (W) Joe Bennett/Sandra Hope (A)

THE TWO WANNABE FANTASTIC FOUR BOOKS GO AT IT IN A FIGHT TO THE DEATH. WHO STAYS? WHO HANGS IT’S HEAD IN SHAME!

Marvel 2-In-One #8 (Marvel)

Chip Zdarksy (W) Paco Medina (A)

YOU DECIDE! Seriously though, both of these books are fantastic and honestly they just got me excited to see the First Family back on the shelves.

Amazing Spider-Man #2 (Marvel)

Nick Spencer (W) Ryan Ottley (A)

WHAT A WORLD! I really wasn’t expecting to read this book, but I did and now I don’t regret it in the least. This is an incredible book and I hope that it can keep up the vibes and things it teases in the first issue. This may become my favorite Spider-Book. What a world.

A Walk Through Hell #3 (Aftershock)

Garth Ennis (W) Goran Sudzuka (A)

Holy hell, this book is fucking intense. It’s a style that only this team could pull off and dammit do they pull it off. I cannot wait to read more of this.

Royal City #13 (Image)

Jeff Lemire (W/A)

Last issue was last week. While this is usually a sign that the solicitation is wrong, I’m gonna leave this in the article because I like filling myself with false hope. Please come out, oh comic Gods!

Saga #54 (Image)

Brian K. Vaughan (W) Fiona Staples (A)

I WAS WRONG! The book isn’t ending, it’s just going on a year long hiatus. So, you know, that fucking sucks but at least it isn’t because the book is ending. Yay. Small victories.

Descender #32 (Image)

Jeff Lemire (W) Dustin Nguyen (A)

IT’S THE END. THE END OF EVERYTHING. I ACTUALLY THINK THEY MAY DO IT, THE MAD MEN. THE UNIVERSE IS NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME. Until, you know Ascender comes out like next year.

As if struck by lightning, the thing that had once been Ed launched himself through the air on stiff legs. He crumpled in the corner of the room, blood running down his face in strange shapes. Gazing the fetish he had carved from between broken legs, suddenly the lights flickered. In its place stood a woman, a God, a thing. It turned its head to its minion but never fully revealed its monstrous features. Somewhere in the back of its mind, Ed screamed.
