It was suddenly a turbulent time for the tar pit at the end of Morbriar lane. The last ten years had been slow even for a tar pit. What seemed like an eternity ago, when monstrous creatures would sink into the pit, keeping it company even if only a for a few fitful moments. Then over time the creatures changed, the plants morphed, the world cooled then warmed up. Then sometime around a hundred years ago, humans, but not fun talky humans, dead humans, began showing up. Sometimes wrapped in blankets, sometimes chained up, sometimes without heads entirely. That was nothing compared to this week.

Rick and Morty VS. Dungeons and Dragons #1 (of 4) (IDW)

Jim Zub/Patrick Rothfuss (W) Troy Little (A)

I like Rick and Morty. I do. I might make fun of it but as a piece of media, I enjoy it. That being said, the only reason I’m picking this up is the creative team. Patrick Rothfuss on a comic based on an Adult Swim show should get your attention.

Lex Luthor/Porky Pig Special #1 (DC)

Mark Russell/Jim Fanning (W) Brad Walker/John Loter (A)

I am really fucking excited for this comic. I just read the first trade of The Flintstones comic, and you all know how I felt about the Snagglepuss Chronicles. I’m really warming up to Mark Russell. More on that in the next few months as he releases more stuff.

Daredevil Annual #1 (Marvel)
Erica Schultz (W) Marcio Takara (A)

This is only low on the list because I’m always nervous about new people writing the annuals to series I follow. I’m giving it a chance because Schultz has an interesting resume also I like Misty Knight so that helps.

X-O Manowar #18 (Valiant)

Matt Kindt (W) Trevor Hairsine (A)

Not gonna lie. The last issue kinda bored me. I love this saga for the most part, but I feel like this arc is just here so that Kindt can get a second wind for his next big move.

Exiles #7 (Marvel)

Saladin Ahmed (W) Dario Brizuela (A)

So, remember how I said I’d have to see where the story goes if I was going to keep reading it. Well, as it turns out, western Marvel Universe is actually a pretty solid direction. I’m on board again.

Blackwood #4 (of 4) (Dark Horse)

Evan Dorkin (W) Veronica Fish (A)

I had my doubts about this book after the first issue but the last two issues have really been great. I dig this book and it’s strangely complex way of building characterization. It’s a tightrope act that really pays off.

Euthanauts #2 (Black Crown)

Tini Howard (W) Nick Robles (A)

I am still not 100% how I feel about this book, but I’m pretty sure I enjoy it. We’ll have to see how the first arc plays out but so far I’m in. It’s a dark concept that explores the afterlife, the effect death has on the living, and just general paranormal fun stuffs.

The Silencer Annual #1 (DC)

Dan Abnett (W) Jackson Herbert (A)

The Silencer meets Batman himself. I didn’t know I wanted this until it was brought to me. Although, I am a little curious how this plays into the actual continuity, as the last issue had a big cliffhanger and this one seems to take place relatively recently but not after the last issue. Weird.

X-Men: Grand Design – Second Genesis #2 (Marvel)

Ed Piskor (W/A)

I really fucking love this book. There is something almost comical about having the strange mind-fuck continuity of the X-men laid out so matter-of-factly. It’s almost like a celebration of the absurdity of it all and it’s everything I ever wanted.

Moon Knight #198 (Marvel)

Max Bemis (W) Jacen Burrows (A)

Bemis’s run on Moon Knight ends with issue 200. It was (and is still) a crazy ride. A lot more comical than some of the Moon Knight runs, but definitely adds a lot of fun stuff to the canon and definitely leaves the next writer with a treasure trove of stuff to sort through. I’m excited for the future of this character and this writer.

Ms. Marvel #33 (Marvel)

G. Willow Wilson (W) Nico Leon (A)

This is one of the only times you’ll hear me say I’m glad the status quo for this book is back. I love the growing and evolving of all the characters, but having the whole squad back in action just fills me with warm fuzzies.

Runaways #12 (Marvel)

Rainbow Rowell (W) Kris Anka (A)

I fucking love this book. If you are missing out on this, you need to think about your life decisions. This book is the teen team up book that has been missing from the stands for too long. Please do yourself a favor, read this book.

Web of Venom: Ve’Nam #1 (Marvel)

Donny Cates (W) Juanan Ramirez (A)

Okay, cheesy name aside, I’m really interested in this book. Ever since Cates changed the mythos of the symbiote, I’ve had a lot of questions. This will answer at least a couple. I hope. Who knows? My life is already full of disappointment.

Bone Parish #2 (Boom! Studios)

Cullen Bunn (W) Jonas Scharf (A)

I fucking loved the first issue of this book. It’s got all the good stuff; death, sex, drugs, hallucination, drugs, bone dust, drugs. All the stuff I love.

Marvel 2-In-One #9 (Marvel)

Chip Zdarsky (W) Ramon Perez (A)

Uh. Someone is trying to be the Fantastic Four and I don’t like that. I mean, I probably will, but I have to sound dramatic. I’m not really a polarizing guy anymore. I’m just shades of gray now, so I lie sometimes. Okay?

The New World #2 (of 5) (Image)

Ales Kot (W) Tradd Moore (A)

This book subverted my expectations a lot. I wasn’t prepared for a tongue in cheek love story. I was kinda lead to believe it would be more political. I don’t know what I’m trying to say. I liked it. It was different. I think that’ll suffice.

A Walk Through Hell #4 (Aftershock)

Garth Ennis (W) Goran Sudzuka (A)

This book has a lot of moving parts. So far very few actually connect to make a working clock, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to watch all the parts click and clack in order. I’m excited to see the future of this book.

Isola #5 (Image)

Brenden Fletcher (W) Karl Kerschl (A)

End of the first arc of this spectacularly wonderful book. I really love this story. It has the potential to be one of the biggest books Image is publishing. I can honestly see it becoming the next Saga. Maybe I’m jumping the gun here, but you should read it and make your own assessment.

At first the pit was worried. The humans had covered a large part of the pit with a facility, then the weird things started showing up. Humans with too many limbs. Humans without skin. Humans with strange symbols cut into their skin. Humans that weren’t really humans. Then something stranger. Something large and confusing that changed the tar pit. Suddenly the tar pit was noticing things. Thinking things. Writing things.
