Oh, you want me to tell you what to pick up? Well, I’m not going to, I’m going to write what I want to pick up. If you want a list of comics to read, go to your comic shop and bug the person at the register. Actually scratch that, they probably already hate you. I mean they hate everyone, so it’s not that unusual. Either way, never ever tell them I sent you. They all hate Top of The Stack.
Secret Wars Journal #4 of 5 (Marvel)
Mike Benson/ Sina Grace (W) Laura Braga/Ken Lashley (A)
This series is really hard for me to judge. As my friend put it “It’s just like Battleworld, but at least Journal has had one really good issue”. I agree with you friend who will not be named. I agree.
Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies #3 (Marvel)
James Robinson (W) Steve Pugh (A)
This series has been fairly solid, I can’t say that I have a problem with it, I just wish there was some more umph to it. I mean for Doom’s sake, it’s about a city in the middle of the zombie/robot apocalypse. I feel like that has some rich content to say the least.
Ivar, Timewalker #8 (Valiant)
Fred Van Lente (W) Francis Portela (A)
The last few issues of this comic have been pretty good. After a couple slower issues, I think we are starting to get some pay off for our journey. A pretty badass fight happened last issue too. That’s always fun. How often do you get to write a character vomiting his way back to a spaceship after being booted from it? Not very often, I’d imagine.
George Romero’s Empire of the Dead: Act Three #4 of 5 (Marvel)
George A. Romero (W) Andrea Mutti (A)
This series is coming to a close, and honestly, I feel like it may be leading down a very predictable road. If they do what it seems like they are going to do, it will end in a very unsatisfying conclusion, but seeing as this comic likes to change things up, I doubt it will end in that fashion.
Runaways #3 (Marvel)
Noelle Stevenson (W) Sanford Greene (A)
This series is really really fun and something that the Marvel current catalog needs. Seriously, I will be sad if we don’t get at least a Young Avengers comic after Secret Wars. Although, people have been begging since the last series was cut short, to no avail.
1872 #2 (Marvel)
Gerry Duggan (W) Doc Shaner (A)
It is a damn shame that the universe that this domain exists in has been destroyed, because hot damn, this is a cool world. I would love to see another series with this world in it. It seems so colorful and just plain exciting.
Rai #9 (Valiant)
Matt Kindt (W) Clayton Crain (A)
A whole new arc starts with this issue. Can I say? I missed you Rai. Hey, that rhymed. I’m so clever. You totally think I’m clever, I can tell these things.
Weirdworld #3 (Marvel)
Jason Aaron (W) Mike Del Mundo (A)
This series is freaking nuts. I absolutely love it. Del Mundo does the most incredible job bringing this insanity to life with his artwork. Again, this Secret Wars thing is a little bit of a double edged sword, because after this comic ends, this world is gone. Or is it?
Astro City #26 (Vertigo)
Kurt Busiek (W) Brent Eric Anderson (A)
This issue marks the 20th anniversary of the comic. That’s a pretty awesome accomplishment if you ask me. I mean to take a comic and write it on and off for twenty years is something only a few people throughout the medium can ever say they did. Congrats guys!
Wolf #2 (Image)
Ales Kot (W) Matt Taylor (A)
The first issue of this comic reminds me of John Constantine waking up in the world of Fables. Weird things are afoot in this world and I need to know more. Very visceral, and wonderfully painted, this comic is going to be one to look out for.
Trees #12 (Image)
Warren Ellis (W) Jason Howard (A)
The last issue had a couple “OH SHIT” moments, and I’m eager to jump back into the whole cataclysmic opera. Honestly, I know I’ve said it before, but the whole focus of this comic and the tone has changed so much from the first arc. I love it, I loved it before too, I just love it now also.
Manifest Destiny #16 (Image)
Chris Dingess (W) Matthew Roberts (A)
This series is like mothers milk to me. That sounds weird when I commit to it. Uh, it is sustenance for my reader’s soul. Yeah, that sounds better, maybe a little pretentious, but I mean, not bad. I love this comic, it brings some insanely cool ideas to a journey that I already thought was interesting. Also, here we go again with my strange affection for historical fiction comics. Still a weird niche…
Thar she blows. Another fine specimen of whatever the hell it is that I’ve cursed the world and it’s inhabitants with. The mystery is up to you! What would you call this cacophony of bullshit? Not quite a review, not quite a preview. An opinionated list. Whatever this is, remember to stay smart, ya hear?
