Secret Wars Journal #5 of 5 (Marvel)
Jen Soska/Sylvia Soska/Aaron Alexovich (W) Alec Morgan/Diogo Saito (A)
The final issue in this less than fantastic series. There has been a few interesting issues of this comic, but this isn’t one that I’d say is a necessary read. Although with this issue we get a pretty cool horror story, so that might be worthy of a read.
Auteur: Sister Bambi #4 of 5 (Oni Press)
Rick Spears (W) James Callahan (A)
I fully realize that this comic may not be for everyone, but it meshes with my cynical, sarcastic mind so well that I can’t help but love it’s disingenuous way of playing the story. It’s lovely in a brutal sort of way.
Ivar, Timewalker #9 (Valiant)
Fred Van Lente (W) Pere Perez (A)
This comic is like a beach. It’s nice and sunny, but the water gets a little too cold, and the sand gets a little too hot. I like it a lot, but there are definitely valleys and crests of interest in this story, you know, staying with the ocean metaphor.
Ufology #5 of 6 (BOOM!)
James Tynion IV (W) Matt Fox (A)
I’m still not 100% how I feel about this comic. While that may seem a little strange as it is almost done, I think I feel that way because these next few issues can really solidify what this comic is all about. I wait cautiously.
Rai #10 (Valiant)
Matt Kindt (W) Clayton Crain (A)
This series pumped itself up for one hell of an arc. I am vigorously anticipating the next few issues, if they are anything like the last issue then we are in for a dark tale.
Constantine: The Hellblazer #4 (DC)
Ming Doyle/James Tynion IV (W) Vanesa Del Rey (A)
Hey, you know that guy whos all about ghosties and faces insurmountable odds daily? Well this is not the same guy, but this is the backstabbing hellhound-chasing bastard at the feet of his own misery and misfortune, so there’s that.
Bloodshot Reborn #6 (Valiant)
Jeff Lemire (W) Butch Guice (A)
The first issue of the second arc of Valiant’s brave move at revitalizing what is a rightfully awesome character. Sadly, we lose the brilliant art of Mico Suayan. Happily, we gain the brilliant art of Butch Guice. I think we ended up pretty okay.
Captain America: White #1 (Marvel)
Jeph Loeb (W) Tim Sale (A)
Finally. I mean holy shit! Everyone thought that this project had gone the way of the Dodo. Issue #0 came out seven years ago. It is complete at last. Or maybe this is just a tease. Who knows?
Miracleman By Gaiman and Buckingham #2 (Marvel)
Neil Gaiman (W) Mark Buckingham (A)
I know what you’re thinking. Is that really the title? Yes, it is. I believe it is to distinguish the comic from the Miracleman comic that they released earlier this year. Keeping in true Marvel fashion, they rebooted the series with the entrance of a new creative team. If this series is as good as the first issue managed to be, I will follow this character wherever it may go.
All-New Hawkeye #5 (Marvel)
Jeff Lemire (W) Ramon K. Perez (A)
This one is cheating a little bit. I have been following this series all the way through Matt Fraction’s run, into this run. I have had a print subscription to Marvel for the longest time and it finally ran out. I think. We shall see. If not, then I will have two issues of this fantastic comic.
ODY-C #7 (Image)
Matt Fraction (W) Christian Ward (A)
I love this comic. It is so fucking pretty. That is all.
Manifest Destiny #17 (Image)
Chris Dingess (W) Matthew Roberts (A)
I am really really excited for the rest of this arc. This series is one of the few that has me chomping a the bit for a new issue every time I put one down. If you aren’t reading this, please, for the sake of comics, do it.
Sex Criminals #12 (Image)
Matt Fraction (W) Chip Zdarsky (A)
Shit is about to get real as shit, son. I mean you think you know real, but you don’t know reality this real, son. Son. This is the shit. Honestly, this series kicks the pants off of the birds and the bees talk. Give it to your children. (Disclaimer: Don’t really give it to children, give it to your awkward teens instead and watch the uncomfortable situations unfurl)
Tokyo Ghost #1 (Image)
Rick Remender (W) Sean Murphy (A)
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR OVER A YEAR FOR THIS COMIC TO COME OUT! Holy Asgardian bologna, I am pumped for this team. I mean everyone involved in this comic has been releasing crazy good stuff over the last few years and this puts them all in one place. I am giddy. EMOJI!
The Fade Out #9 (Image)
Ed Brubaker (W) Sean Phillips (A)
GAH! When is someone going to scoop this title up and turn it into an inflated, over exaggerated, and generally flaccid film representation? Seriously, I mean with all the recent period pieces coming out, I would not be surprised if we hear about a film adaptation of this comic in a couple years. Then all the fans of the original can say things like, “Guh, it’s so not as good as the comics.” and “I remember reading this comic before anyone knew about it.” and “(general panicked screaming)”. Freakin’ nerds.
He done did it again. By “he” I mean myself. By did it again, I mean writing an article about the comic books I read. I feel so pompous writing this sometimes, so please, feel free to chime in and give me your picks for the week, or just tell me how wrong I am and how I’ve desecrated the art form. Either way, put words at me. Stay Smart ya hear.
