I am back. Did you miss me? Yeah, me neither. Unfortunately, we missed out on a pretty good week of comics last week. We Stand on Guard by Brian K. Vaughan came out, along with a comic from personal favorite Brandon Graham, 8house: Arclight. Either way, that was then, this is Top of the Stack, or now, whichever you prefer.
Justice League United #11 (DC)
Jeff Lemire (W) Travel Foreman (A)
So, I can’t say that I don’t like this comic. I really like this comic. That being said, I remember a couple times when I felt like this comic wasn’t really living up to what I wanted it to be.
Injection #3 (Image)
Warren Ellis (W) Declan Shalvey (A)
I am really conflicted about this comic. While I feel as if Ellis’s writing is definitely on point, I am still confused as to what this comic is truly about. I really want to see where this goes, but I am also trying to trim the fat on my pull list. I may be two down come next week. Womp womp
Squadron Sinister #2 (Marvel)
Marc Guggenheim (W) Carlos Pacheco (A)
I felt as if the majority of the first issue of this comic dealt with politics of this group and the world they inhabit. We got a few badass moments of these characters being, well, badass, but I want more. So much more.
1872 #1 (Marvel)
Gerry Duggan (W) Doc Shaner (A)
Okay, this is a cool concept and it’s looking like at least one character from this series will be staying with us after Secret Wars. I just love the idea of the marvel universe out of time. Much like 1602, this one is sure to bring some awesome stuff to the old west.
Runaways #2 (Marvel)
Noelle Stevenson (W) Sanford Greene (A)
The first issue of this comic was great. Very light and fun, carrying over what series like Ms. Marvel were doing, and are still doing, to liven up a comic book world that is just now getting over its dark and gritty phase.
Civil War #1 (Marvel)
Charles Soule (W) Leinil Francis Yu (A)
I get that Soule is a lawyer, but is he just drawn to stories that have law riddeled backgrounds. I mean first She-Hulk, then this, and soon he will be heading the reboot of Daredevil. I mean I guess if it had to be anyone. In all honesty, I am really looking forward to this team-up.
Strange Fruit #1 of 4 (BOOM!)
Mark Waid (W) J.G. Jones (A)
I heard about this comic about a year ago and it kind of faded from view for a while. This is really cool because of how poignant it is to our culture here almost 100 years later. A fictionalized story about rising tides on the Mississippi, both figuratively and literally.
Archie #1 (Archie Comics)
Mark Waid (W) Fiona Staples (A)
With everything getting a shiny new reboot, why not Archie. That’s taking the piss a little. Honestly I am thrilled with this. I have never been a devout Archie reader, but with a team up as amazing as this one, how can I pass up the chance to jump on. You got what you wanted from me, are you happy now?
Master of Kung Fu #3 of 4 (Marvel)
Haden Blackman (W) Dalibor Talajic (A)
While the second issue wasn’t as good as the first issue, I am still thoroughly excited for this comic. With a new adaptation and look for some of Marvel’s mutants and various other characters, it’s really fun to play “who are you” when reading through the comic.
Constantine: The Hellblazer #2 (DC)
James Tynion IV/Ming Doyle (W) Riley Rossmo (A)
This series really shocked me. I should have known that DC wouldn’t allow a mediocre Constantine comic after the resurgence of interest in the character after the ill-fated show, but I let myself be fooled by a name I didn’t know. You are awesome Doyle.
Bloodshot Reborn #4 (Valiant)
Jeff Lemire (W) Mico Suayan (A)
This series keeps getting better and better. I’ve heard some reviews saying things and words at the way Lemire writes as if he is trying to figure out why this character is interesting. To them I say, humbug. What I see is a team who knows exactly why this character is awesome, and is trying to build a new world and fanbase to celebrate this wicked warrior.
Black Science #16 (Image)
Rick Remender (W) Matteo Scalera (A)
So, arguably the only person with any sense may have just been chopped in the head with a laser ax. Now the only reason that that isn’t a spoiler is because he only really makes his voice heard in the last issue. I am interested to see how our deadly, doomed, dystopian, dimension ditching, disfunctional, delusional, delinquents do. D-word.
Batman #42 (DC)
Scott Snyder (W) Greg Capullo (A)
Along with the last issue being the first appearance of Commissioner Batman, we got a pretty friggan hefty tease on the final page of the comic. Those things mixed makes this in contention for favorite ongoing superhero comic. Seriously, I thought this comic couldn’t get better. The difference of milk and wine.
Descender #5 (Image)
Jeff Lemire (W) Dustin Nguyen (A)
Talking about favorite comics. This series is a phenomenal breakout. I mean could you expect any less from such a brilliant team? At the end of the first arc I can only ask, what next? I am truly excited for the future of this comic. Sony definitely made a good decision buying the rights to this one.
Saga #30 (Image)
Brian K. Vaughan (W) Fiona Staples (A)
Had you talked to me five years ago and told me my favorite comic of all time would be about a child being raised in space by two members of two warring factions, I probably would have looked at you weird and asked you why you were wearing shutter shades, smelled of, what I could only imagine is the smell of time travel. It’s a very specific smell.
All that gooey comic goodness in one easy to manage suppository. Where else could you get attention and care like that? No where. No one else would do that. I am your only love. Stay smart.
