This week we get no releases on blu-ray.  Zilch.  Nada.  So, instead, let us look back on some of the bigger releases of 2014.  And if you’re still looking for a last minute holiday gift from your local Best Buy or what not, some of these might appeal to you.

The big thing these days are super hero movies, so lets start with those.  2014 saw the blu-ray release of Thor: The Dark WorldCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past; but the best one of the year, hands down (though it doesn’t feel much like a “super-hero” movie) is Guardians of the Galaxy.

For the little ones, Frozen iced the competition, as Disney came out guns blazing with this one.   And for maybe the young adult, maybe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Reviews for that one were mediocre, but I can’t say for myself, as I have not seen it… yet.  But on the definitely better side, we have How to Train a Dragon 2 (which was amazing), and The Lego Movie (which was even more amazing).

Lego Movie

What I have seen and can defiantly vote against is the latest Transformers: Age of Extinction.  There was nothing wrong with it production-wise, but there was nothing good with it either.  and if i’m gonna spend 3 hours in front of the TV, I should at the very least entertained… of course, you can’t really expect much more from a horrid director like Michael Bay.   Speaking of directors though, some of the best ones out there had movies released this year. Darren Aronofsky with Noah,  and while Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and David Fincher’s Gone Girl, also came out recently, we won’t be seeing those on blu-ray until next year.

Noah

Noah and Interstellar where both “big screen” movies, so while we’re on that subject lets talk about another big screen movie, like Godzilla.  This latest reboot actually received decent reviews and was noted to pay good homage to the original film.  I bought this already, but have not had a chance to watch it yet… definitely during holiday break.

Godzilla

Some other ones, 22 Jump Street was a big hit, and Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow, was actually really good too!  And for the television series lovers, season 4 of The Walking Dead (last years season) came out on blu-ray this year, along with Fargo and the extremely good True Detective from HBO.

True Detective

I think those are most of the big ones of the year.  I’m sure I may have missed some, so feel free to add to the list in the comments below!
